Paul’s prayer for the Colossians reaches a crescendo in gratitude. After praying that believers would be filled with the knowledge of God’s will, walk worthy of the Lord, bear fruit, grow in knowledge, and endure with joy, he now identifies the final mark of spiritual maturity: thanksgiving.
A mature Christian is a grateful Christian. But this gratitude is not shallow optimism. It is not merely thanksgiving for material blessings, provision, or circumstantial relief. Paul directs our focus to something far greater: “giving thanks to the Father, who has qualified us to share in the inheritance of the saints in light.”
The heart of Christian gratitude is salvation. Paul reminds us that we were not qualified. We had no merit, no righteousness of our own, no claim upon God’s mercy. If entrance into God’s inheritance depended on our performance, heaven would be forever barred.
Yet the wonder of the gospel is this: God qualified us. He did not wait for us to prove ourselves worthy. He did not improve our résumé and then admit us. He acted. Through Christ, He clothed us in a righteousness not our own. The unqualified were made fit. The unworthy were welcomed. The disinherited were made heirs.
Paul insists that if we truly grasp this reality, gratitude will not need to be forced. When believers grow cold in thanksgiving, it is often because salvation has become small in their eyes. Earthly comforts excite them more than eternal redemption. Temporary blessings stir more joy than forgiveness of sins. But the spiritually mature Christian is thrilled above all that God has redeemed them.
So the question remains: Is your heart more filled with complaint or thanksgiving? Are you more stirred by what God has not done, or by what He has already accomplished in Christ?
Spiritual maturity expresses itself not merely in endurance or fruitfulness, but, from the depths of redeemed awareness: that to be a Christian is nothing short of a miracle. Thus, gratitude to God.
