Pastor Sam Oyeyinka shared on the surpassing worth of Christ, urging us to examine where we place our confidence and what we truly see as good.
He explained that our natural boast is often in our privileges or accomplishments—be it family pedigree, education, possessions, or personal abilities. Yet, because of sin, we’re prone to misunderstand what our deepest need is. We think these things will satisfy, but our soul’s true craving is for rest—a state of joy, peace, and wholeness free from anxiety and fear. Only Christ can give this rest, both now and perfectly in eternity.
Drawing from Philippians 3, he highlighted how Paul counted all earthly gains as rubbish compared to gaining Christ. Legalistic, performance-based Christianity that relies on our efforts robs us of this rest, making God merely a system of rewards and placing glory on ourselves. Likewise, chasing human privileges or successes will leave us restless.
Pursuing anything outside Christ as our ultimate good—even good gifts from God—will burden us, make us self-centred, or even lead us into sin. He urged us to see everything as a gift that does not define our worth; Christ alone does. God designed restlessness to draw us back to Him. True rest is found when our deepest measure of good becomes Christ Himself—when we see that even afflictions that drive us closer to Him are, ultimately, good.
