In today’s message, Doing It God's Way, part of our Genesis series on Beginnings, Pastor Adeola Ogundele looks at Genesis 16 to warn against taking matters into our own hands. Sarah, weighed down by barrenness and cultural shame, urged Abraham to have a child with Hagar—choosing a human shortcut over waiting on God. This decision brought lasting pain.
Pastor Adeola reminds us how easily we slip into trying to “help God out,” especially when our identity rests on things like marriage, children, or success. Yet our worth is not in what we achieve, but in God’s grace to us in Christ.
God is working out His glory and our good, calling us to wait on Him rather than compromise. Unlike the saying that God helps those who help themselves, Scripture shows He helps those who cannot help themselves—He acts for those who wait for Him

Pastor Sam Oyeyinka shared on the surpassing worth of Christ, urging us to examine where we place our confidence and what we truly see as good.
He explained that our natural boast is often in our privileges or accomplishments—be it family pedigree, education, possessions, or personal abilities. Yet, because of sin, we’re prone to misunderstand what our deepest need is. We think these things will satisfy, but our soul’s true craving is for rest—a state of joy, peace, and wholeness free from anxiety and fear. Only Christ can give this rest, both now and perfectly in eternity.
Drawing from Philippians 3, he highlighted how Paul counted all earthly gains as rubbish compared to gaining Christ. Legalistic, performance-based Christianity that relies on our efforts robs us of this rest, making God merely a system of rewards and placing glory on ourselves. Likewise, chasing human privileges or successes will leave us restless.
Pursuing anything outside Christ as our ultimate good—even good gifts from God—will burden us, make us self-centred, or even lead us into sin. He urged us to see everything as a gift that does not define our worth; Christ alone does. God designed restlessness to draw us back to Him. True rest is found when our deepest measure of good becomes Christ Himself—when we see that even afflictions that drive us closer to Him are, ultimately, good.

In the second part of the mini series, The Voice That Calms Our Fears, Pastor Adeola explores Abram’s encounter with God in Genesis 15—a moment of honest questioning met with profound reassurance. Though Abram had walked with God faithfully for years, and it was counted to him as righteousness, he still grappled with doubts about the promise of a child and the land. Yet instead of rebuking him, God graciously addressed Abram’s fears through both His word and a striking covenant ceremony.
God alone passed between the pieces of the sacrifice, pledging on His own immortal life to uphold His promise, in effect saying, “May I suffer a mortal’s fate if either you fail or I fail to keep my word!” This covenant of grace made clear that the fulfilment rested not on Abram’s performance, but entirely on God’s faithfulness.
Centuries later, on a cross cloaked in darkness, Christ bore the penalty for our failures, fully securing the promise first made to Abram. The message reminds us that God is not put off by our struggles with faith.
Like Abram, we are invited to bring our doubts to Him and trust Him to accomplish what we never could. As we look back to the finished work of Christ, we can rest assured that God’s promises hold firm, despite our weakness.

Pastor Adeola continues the Genesis series by reflecting on Abraham’s intimate encounter with God in a season of waiting and uncertainty. Nearly a decade after receiving the promise of descendants, Abraham remains childless, and the weight of unfulfilled expectations threatens his hope. Rather than hiding his frustration, Abraham pours out his heart to God, voicing his fears with reverence and honesty. In doing so, he models a kind of prayer that is raw yet faith-filled—marked not by performance, but by deep dependence.
God responds, not with rebuke, but with reassurance. He confirms that Abraham’s heir will come from his own body and then gives him a vision: the starry sky, with a promise that his descendants would be as numerous. What Abraham couldn’t fully grasp in that moment, we now understand in light of the New Testament—that the stars pointed not only to physical offspring, but to a spiritual legacy that includes all who believe in Christ. Abraham’s response is simple but profound: he believed the Lord, and it was counted to him as righteousness.
The message underscores that God is not indifferent to our doubts or struggles. Scripture reveals a God who is near to the brokenhearted, who pities His children in their weakness, and who meets us with assurance when we are overwhelmed. In our moments of fear, when it feels like God is silent or late, we are reminded that His promises are never at the mercy of our circumstances. His power is not diminished by our pain. Like Abraham, we are invited to bring our heartaches, our disappointments, and even our confusion before God. As one reflection put it: prayer is something weak people do, knowing they have the ear of Someone stronger than them and their situation.
